Well, that’s the summer well and truly over! Another lively holiday season has come and gone, and our town is a bit quieter, a bit more mellow. Before we look at what’s on in Newquay for October, we thought a potted history of our gorgeous town would be a fun thing to talk about.

A short history of Newquay

Roll back time and prehistoric people buried their dead at the Barrowfields and Trevelgue Head, and there’s evidence of Bronze Age and Iron Age homes in the area. By the medieval era our town had developed into a little fishing village, until the 1400s called Towan Blystra, a traditional Cornish language name. The mid 1400s saw Edmund Lacey, Bishop of Exeter, built a new wooden quay in the town, and its name fast changed to ‘Newquay’.

In around 1800 Newquay was home to just 1300 people, but the replacement of the old wooden quay with a rugged new stone one from around 1835 onwards transformed Newquay into a vital centre for tin miners, fisherman and farmers. The railway came in 1876, and our tourist industry was born. By the end of the 1800s we had several smart new hotels to cater for a roaring tourist trade.

The 1930s saw the town’s first Tourist Information Centre. In the 1960s Britain discovered surfing… and the rest is history! Thanks to our excellent surf and gorgeous beaches at Fistral and Watergate, Newquay fast established itself as a star on the surfing circuit.

Today we attract tourists from all over the world as well as throughout Britain. And while we’re busiest during the summer holidays, there’s a lively vacation scene here all year long. Here are just a few of the things that’re going on in and around town during October 2017.
